Don't miss this rare
opportunity to own a piece of Cooperstown's rich history with this
fabulous 1824 firehouse. The building, an excellent example of an
early 19th century Federal structure, was once used as Cooperstown's
engine house. In 1889 the old engine house was bought at a public,
sale by George Mission and was used as a repair shop. In 1890 it
became the private residence of George W. Wood. Anna Cunningham
owned the firehouse for a brief time between 1955 and 1960, when
Mrs. Joseph Campbell, of Cooperstown, purchased the firehouse and
renovated the building, Mrs. Campbell opened an Arts & Craft Center.
The property has remained in the Campbell family, housing Lake
Classic Designs and recently the Freeman's Journal, Cooperstown's
local paper for over one hundred years. The building is adjacent to
an empty lot to the south, and to a residence on the north, and is
similar in scale to surrounding structures. It has first story
garage doors and double second-story doors. There is a fanlight
window in the east (front) gable. The open floor plan is suitable
for office, retail or gallery space. This old engine house could
also be renovated as an incredible village residence. The adjacent
parking lot is one of the last of its kind in the village.
